Ponmudi means Golden Peak
and reaching it is a journey through rubber, cardamom, pepper and tea estates
and 22 hairpin bends to reach the summit at approximately 1100 m
Pit Stops
Thiruvanthapuram to
Kallar is a 1 and 1/2 hour ride
Kallar is the
stream-off of a waterfall and bathing is allowed in it
Kallar to Ponmudi
is 30 minutes
There’s a short
trek right to the top
There’s a 1.5 km
trek to the Ponmudi waterfall in the heart of the Golden Valley tropical forest and reaching it
is an adventure over slippery rocks and the river. No bathing allowed under the
waterfall
The view is well
worth the trip…clouds afloat and moving mist amidst greenery
There’s also an
Orchid & Deer Park
15 minutes from Ponmudi resort
Tip
Carry your own food
and water. The government KTDC eatery offers a limited menu, is expensive and
crowded since there is no other restaurant in the area
Biking is a great way to see Ponmudi but there’s a lot of
traffic so only seasoned bikers should attempt the trip
The accommodation is no great shakes so a day trip from Thiruvanthapuram is best
Getting There
Nearest town is
Thiruvanthapuram, capital city
Take the
Kattakada-Nedumangad-Ponmudi route
