Once upon a long time ago the Pandya king of Madurai and his entourage
took a rest pause at beautiful Kottathavalam. Kotta means fort and Valam's likely meaning is high land so since it is
surrounded by hills on three sides, that’s how it got its name.
Caves have been carved out in the sheer rock face. Within,
rocks take the shape of couches and chairs as well as weapons. Sculpted statues of deities of
Madurai Meenakshi, Ayappa, Murugan and Kannaki look on benignly
Nearby is a 10 acre forest but no wildlife to be sighted here
Get There
Drive down leisurely from the Teekoy coffee estate to Vagamon and the Murugan hills fall en-route
There is a flight of steps cut in the rocks leading up to
the caves near Murugan hills at Kurushimala
It’s 70 km from Kottayam
