Tranquility Zone - River Muvattupuzha

Follow the route of the river Muvattupuzha river and feast your eyes on lushness that is the signature tune of God’s own country. Begin from the city of Kochi and end in the sylvan surround sound of silence in Vembanad

Muvattupuzha river is the confluence of three rivulets - Thodupuzha, Kaliyar and Kothamangalam. It flows down the hills of Taragamkanam, Valiya Parattan Venniyar Mudi and Neriyamangalam. The river spans 121 km and drains into an area of 1554 sq.km. At Vettikkattumukku, Muvattupuzha diverges to become Murinjapuzha and Ithipuzha and finds its final resting place in Vembanad lake. (The names of the river and its tributaries derive from puzha for river preceded by the name of the area)

You can take a boat ride and pass canoes where fish are hauled in and see the shops lining the banks where the fresh fried catch is sold.

Or watch the coconuts being felled from the trees flanking the river on both sides

Pass by women going about their daily chores of washing and get a glimpse into the local small scale industries of coir making (soaked coconuts from which husk is shorn and woven) and calcium hydroxide (ground clam shells heated and soaked in water)

Floating There

·      The Kerala Tourist Development Corporation organises a day long boating trip to Ithipuzha from Kochi. The cost is approx Rs. 700 including the guide. The tour begins in a mechanized boat that steers through the interlinking canals followed by a traditional lunch served on a plantain leaf as it is done in a village and end with a ride on a country boat

A Rare Kathakali Performance

One of the last surviving artistes of Kapplingadu school of Kathakali, veteran MadavoorVasudevan Nair (82) is set to perform Dasamukharavanan, a rare attakkata, Kathakali dance music composition using soliloquys in Sanskrit meter.

Dasamukharavanan derives from the epic Ramayan. It depicts Ravan’s state of mind on losing to Rama to the point that he prays to Lord Shiva to take his life. Rama, sparing his life advises him to rest so that they can take to the battlefield once more and fulfil their dharma as warriors. Dasamukha means 10 faces that showcase Ravan’s conflicting emotions as he battles his inner demons. The 10 faces correspond to the traditional 9 Rasas or emotions which now the Gen Next may know as emoticons.

Sadanam Krishnan Kutty and Kalamandalam Ramachandranunnithan will also perform Balivadham.

It narrates how Rama kills Sugreeva’s brother Bali in return for Sugreeva’s help in battling Ravan.

The performances are in memory of Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval,  the maestro of Kathakali percussion, the chenda, on his 88th birth anniversary.

Picnic like a King - Kottathavalam

Once upon a long time ago the Pandya king of Madurai and his entourage took a rest pause at beautiful Kottathavalam. Kotta means fort and Valam's likely meaning is high land so since it is surrounded by hills on three sides, that’s how it got its name.

Caves have been carved out in the sheer rock face. Within, rocks take the shape of couches and chairs as well as weapons. Sculpted statues of deities of Madurai Meenakshi, Ayappa, Murugan and Kannaki look on benignly

Nearby is a 10 acre forest but no wildlife to be sighted here

Get There

Drive down leisurely from the Teekoy coffee estate to Vagamon and the Murugan hills fall en-route

There is a flight of steps cut in the rocks leading up to the caves near Murugan hills at Kurushimala

It’s 70 km from Kottayam

Weekend Getaway - Ponmudi

Ponmudi means Golden Peak and reaching it is a journey through rubber, cardamom, pepper and tea estates and 22 hairpin bends to reach the summit at approximately 1100 m

Pit Stops

Thiruvanthapuram to Kallar is a 1 and 1/2 hour ride

Kallar is the stream-off of a waterfall and bathing is allowed in it

Kallar to Ponmudi is 30 minutes

There’s a short trek right to the top

There’s a 1.5 km trek to the Ponmudi waterfall in the heart of the Golden Valley tropical forest and reaching it is an adventure over slippery rocks and the river. No bathing allowed under the waterfall

The view is well worth the trip…clouds afloat and moving mist amidst greenery

There’s also an Orchid & Deer Park 15 minutes from Ponmudi resort

Tip

Carry your own food and water. The government KTDC eatery offers a limited menu, is expensive and crowded since there is no other restaurant in the area

Biking is a great way to see Ponmudi but there’s a lot of traffic so only seasoned bikers should attempt the trip

The accommodation is no great shakes so a day trip from Thiruvanthapuram is best

Getting There

Nearest town is Thiruvanthapuram, capital city
